Mobile Suit Gundam 00 is the seventh incarnation of Sunrise's long-running Gundam franchise.

The story to Terminator Salvation finds John Connor – no longer the tortured adolescent seen in previous films – now simply a high-ranking soldier in what we know will one day become his own personal army. Grizzled and hardened, Christian Bale's version of Connor seems in many ways more detached and emotionally robotic than his cyborg counterpart, a machine named Marcus (played here by Sam Worthington) who fully believes himself to be human. Clearly, the film would have this take you by surprise – since the realization of just what Marcus is comes about half-way through the film – but since this vital bit of information is revealed in the trailer, the audience is effectively robbed of what should have been a substantial and emotionally gripping twist.

ACDSee 10 promises to be a program that bridges the gap between high-powered photo alteration software and online sharing programs. With a dizzying amount of options and sophistication, it may do all it promises but it could leave users overwhelmed.

This program opens up with an opportunity for users to take a virtual tour of the program and learn about all its features. This is an excellent place to start, because the ACDSee 10 gets confusing in a hurry. This is not a bad thing, however. Users familiar with Photoshop's options will find everything from cropping and coloring tools to more advance masks and red-eye removers once a picture is selected. Users with photo editing experience will love the versatility of this program, but those without the basics will need a lot of experimenting before they get comfortable with all the icons and options.

Photo alteration is only half the story with ACDSee, which makes it unique. The other side of the program is a confusing collection of file trees, icons and options to save and categorize your photos. This will also require a long trip through the Help menu to sort out. However, once the knowledge is gained, users will enjoy a myriad of opportunities, even one that allows direct uploading to Flickr.

This program is a heavy-hitter, giving users unparalleled tools and flexibility, its only drawback is that newcomers to photo editing could be overwhelmed. Especially with the short 7-day trial that will even have more experienced users scrambling to test all this program offers. That said, experienced users looking for a way to edit and manage images should definitely check ACDSee 10 out.

Trivia: Early in the film, the character Jason finds the DVD Guangdong shi hu xing yi wu xi (1980) in Hop’s pawn shop. ‘The Ten Tigers of Kwangtung’ (English title) is often regarded by martial arts film experts as the ultimate Shaw Brothers martial arts film, because it features a star-studded cast of legendary martial arts actors including ‘Ti Lung’, ‘Alexander Fu Sheng’ and major and supporting actors from The Venom Mob (which includes all six principle actors from The Five Venoms). The film also featured a younger generation of Shaw Brothers actors and was meant as a way to “pass the torch” from then-veteran Shaw Brothers actors to the new generation of actors. The existence of two products using the McAfee name, McAfee VirusScan Online (located at www.mcafee.com) and McAfee VirusScan 5.x, 6.x, and 7.x (located at www.mcafee-at-home.com or at www.networkassociates.com), is confusing. As far as we know, the original McAfee Antivirus was sold by their owner, Network Associates, and is today known as McAfee VirusScan Online. Later Network Associates released a new antivirus program, today known as McAfee VirusScan. Both products are using the same antivirus engine. VirusScan has more features, but can, according to user feedback, sometimes be difficult to install and is often unstable. VirusScan Online on the other hand is a smaller, more reliable program, with several of its crucial components actually residing on McAfee's server rather than on your computers hard disk.

Update: Recently Network Associates has taken steps to reacquire McAfee VirusScanOnline. If they are successful these two products may end up being merged into one.

It's our opinion that McAfee VirusScan is far from as good as you could get the impression of by reading some reviews, where McAfee VirusScan often trails Norton Anti-Virus. We believe McAfee VirusScan suffers from many of the flaws of Norton Anti-Virus. Those are instability, difficult to install, difficult to uninstall, and just generally lacking many of the features that we want in a good antivirus program.

AVG Internet Security 8.0 is the latest version of the complete home security package from the company that made a name for itself by offering powerful, free antivirus software to the masses. It's a pretty comprehensive suite of tools designed to protect all areas of your system, with a particular emphasis on online threats.

During installation you can choose to enable the AVG Security Toolbar, which uses the LinkScanner component to allow for real-time protection against malicious Web pages and automatic downloads. You also have the option here to perform a software and definition update, and create a schedule for automatic scanning.

It's a pretty fast process, and before long you're taken to the main interface, where you can monitor the level of protection via a set of 12 icons covering areas such as anti-virus, anti-spyware and the firewall. You can turn each of these components on and off individually to customise your level of security, but strangely certain components such as anti-virus or anti-spam don't appear to offer any customisation features, instead simply reporting whether the component is up to date.

Having improved a lot last year in Symantec's flagship antivirus product, it makes sense we'd see more modest enhancements for this year's Norton AntiVirus 2008. While Norton AntiVirus 2008's antivirus test results compare favorably to our Editors' Choice winner Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7, it's the user experience that suffers in this release. The final size, a hefty 300MB, makes us wonder what's taking up all that extra space--Norton AntiVirus 2008 is roughly six times the file size as Kaspersky. Unlike Kaspersky, Norton AntiVirus 2008 is only available in a single-user license edition. Unlike Kaspersky, Symantec provides Norton users with little explanation of its features or settings, either in the configuration settings or on its technical support section. Also we don't like Norton's dependency on Internet Explorer to explain Help items or services provided by Symantec (windows pop up in IE even when Firefox is your default browser), or that fee-based services have once again crept into the technical support section. Setup
Norton AntiVirus costs $39.99 for a single license. By comparison, Panda Antivirus offers its three-user license for the same price. While Kaspersky is slightly more expensive, selling its single-user license for $49.95, it offers a three-user license for just $10 more. There are no three-user licenses available for Norton AntiVirus 2008, so, if you have two more computers in your home network, you'll have to pay $40 for each computer.

Norton AntiVirus 2008 runs on Windows XP and Windows Vista, but not Windows 2000 or any earlier version of Windows. Norton AntiVirus 2008 requires at least 256MB of RAM and a whopping 300MB hard drive (consuming roughly six times the space of most of its 2008 competitors). Symantec does offer a full function 15-day trail of Norton AntiVirus 2008.

LiveUpdate, which used to be a separate process, is now integrated into Norton AntiVirus 2008--and about time. VMware Workstation is pricey, can be tough to configure, and requires that you buy additional OSs to populate its virtual machines, but it's incredibly stable, fast as all get-out, and sophisticated enough for the most advanced applications. Virtual PC is a cheaper and easier buy for home users, but VMware Workstation is the way to go for businesses and demanding power users.

Start with Windows or Linux
VMware Workstation lets you build virtual machines on either Windows or Linux host PCs. The Windows version requires NT, 2000, or XP on the host, while the Linux edition needs Red Hat, SuSE, or Linux-Mandrake distributions. VMware's list of guest OSs, those you can install in the virtual machines you create within the application, is a lot longer: MS-DOS, any edition of Windows (back to 3.1 and as recent as XP), and any version of Linux.

Hard drive partitions...who needs such a thing? Well, before anything else, I must say what a partition is, when talking about computer engineering, since I don't care about the math-related terms or other uses of this word.

Think about a partition as a slice of a pie. Why would one slice a pie? Usually, one of the reasons would be "to eat it easier". Hard disk drive partitioning is used to create logical divisions on that drive, allowing logical formatting that depends on the operating system and the file system(s) you want to use.

There are a lot of reasons to partition your hard drive, and even if you don't want to have three Windows versions and five Linux distros installed on your computer, there are two solid reasons about it.

Better organization on your hard drive leads to improved speed and reliability, and there are two problems that can be solved here, as I was saying earlier, and both are related to file fragmentation.

The first problem to take down is swap file fragmentation, and the solution is to create a swap partition close to the beginning of your hard drive (first partition will have the OS installed on it and the second must be the swap one, since access time increases as you're heading towards the physical end of your drive) and place on it a fixed-size swap file as large as possible (usual recommendations are to make it two and half times the size of your system's memory).

The second problem that comes as a natural consequence to the first one is the need to keep your boot (system) partition as clean as possible, so a good idea is to create a new slice for installing programs, and the game goes on from here, but I am sure you got the idea.

Open Office 2.4

The maturity of OpenOffice is fast winning over many of those still deep-rooted in a Microsoft Office way of working, and while this latest release isn't likely to tip too many more over the edge, it's a further move forward in the quest to be accepted as the legitimate alternative that it already is.

OpenOffice 2.4 is the last update to the 2.x development line of the software, before it moves on to a full version 3 later in the year. Version 3 looks interesting, too: that's when support for Microsoft Office 2007 is said to be integrated into the software (something that even early versions of Microsoft's own Office tool don't offer by default!), along with PDF importing facilities and a few other progressions.

It's still worth downloading and giving version 2.4 a spin, though. For those new to the software, OpenOffice is a fully featured office suite that brings together a word processor (Writer), spreadsheet (Calc), presentation package (Impress), database tool (Base), a scientific formula creator (Math) and a drawing program (er, Draw).

HeSomeone said on some forum that soon the age of optical drives would come to an end and that softwares like UltraISO would soon become useless. The truth is that this is far from happening, especially when Blu-ray won the HD war and it's just started to warm up. Plus, optical media is the best solution for long term keeping of files; I have a 7 years old CD that still works with no problems (although I probably should make a copy, just to stay on the safe side).

But our interest today is the latest version of UltraISO, so let's get to it while it's still hot (it was released yesterday). At a first glance, the version number 9 of the software does not seem to have brought changes, but a closer look will reveal its extended functionality. The same limitation is maintained in the trial version, so you still can't use the application for working with more than 300MB worth of files.

The interface preserved its looks and the same explorer functionality is available, with dual panes for viewing both local files and folders as well as the structure of the image. Adding files from one part to another is easily achieved with a drag and drop operation or by using the context menus of both panels. Simply put, UltraISO is that sort of the software you can't possibly find hard to use, maybe a little confusing at the beginning, but, once you've grown accustomed with it, you cannot but appreciate its display of options in the window and the dual pane structure of the interface.

As is now sadly the norm with seemingly every media-related program that we install onto our test machines, Nero 8 is keen, upon installation, to be the default app for every form of media possible on our PC. It's got manners, so it does give you the option of changing what it associates itself with, but the default list of audio, video and image files that pops up is eye-watering.

It's also indicative of how Nero has grown - in many senses - over the years. As with its ongoing main rival Easy Media Creator, Nero has long since eschewed its roots as a simple burning application. Now it's more of an all-encompassing suite, with individual tools to help you capture and edit audio, manipulate your images, design disc covers, record DVDs, back-up your computer, stream media and play back movies and music.

You can access all of these functions individually through the start menu, or there's the now-traditional Nero StartSmart that makes a really good fist of gluing all of the parts together. StartSmart is one of the few areas of Nero to undergo any kind of notable change, and it's a treasure-trove for the less experienced user, allowing them to choose what they want by function rather than meaningless program name. Logically laid out, it allows you to perform a basic burn from its menu screen, but also gives easy access to the sizeable number of functions that Nero can support. It's a good improvement on the more cumbersome equivalent from Nero 7

Macromedia freehand 11

FreeHand has had a long and distinguished career since it was first launched 15 years ago, but time has recently seemed to be catching up on it. While Macromedia concentrated its development efforts on its web-oriented MX applications, FreeHand was put on the back burner and fell seriously behind its main rivals, CorelDRAW and Illustrator. So is this latest release evidence of further decline or has FreeHand finally risen to the challenge?

One of the surest signs of FreeHand's age - and Macromedia's lack of interest - was the program's antiquated and unhelpful interface. That's no longer the case as the working environment has been given the full MX treatment with the previously free-floating palettes conveniently docked and arranged into collapsible panel groups. There are still occasional idiosyncracies such as the survival of the dedicated Halftones panel, but features such as the new shared Spell Checker and Answers panel help reinforce the cross-application MX identity and boost efficiency.

The biggest boost comes from the new Object panel. This incorporates the functionality of the former Object, Fill, Stroke and Text Inspectors into one central panel for controlling everything about the appearance of your design elements. The way that FreeHand MX manages its formatting has also been radically overhauled. In particular objects can now support multiple attributes so that you can add more than one stroke and fill to your object. Each attribute is listed at the top of the Object panel and you can quickly format each in turn.

Adobe Photoshop CS3

Photoshop has grown and changed over the years, but has always incorporated the latest developments, reinforcing its position as the industry standard for professional image editing. The first Windows version (v2.5) appeared in 1992, layers were introduced in version 3.0 in 1994, multiple undo history in version 5.0 in 1998, and camera RAW support was added with version 7.0 in 2002. The concept of Creative Suite, incorporating and harmonising a whole range of Adobe’s other programs, including ImageReady, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere, Encore and AfterEffects, was introduced in 2003 along with Photoshop 8.0, known as Photoshop CS. An update, unsurprisingly called Photoshop CS2, came along less than two years later in April 2005, adding many new features such as Smart Objects, a red-eye tool and the invaluable Spot Healing brush.

Here we are now in May 2007, and it’s update time again. This time it’s Photoshop CS3, significantly the tenth version of the program, and the most ambitious to date. It’s also somewhat larger than that original version 1.0, since it comes on a DVD and requires 1.5GB of disk space for installation. Version 10.0 improves many existing features, adds some surprising new ones, and also greatly improves the appearance of the user interface, something which has needed doing since version 7.0. Photoshop is launched along with the rest of the newly revamped Creative Suite 3, but is of course available as a stand-alone program.
